Women's Program

Women's Program

Welcome to the largest Women's Soccer Program in B.C.
The Women's division is to accommodate women who want to continue with soccer past U18. NSGSC is entering it's tenth winter season in the Metro Women's Soccer League, and has multiple NSGSC Women's teams in almost every division. There are no age restrictions in this league, other than players must be 17 by December 31st of the registration year. It is our expectation that the teams will form and choose their own coaches and managers. If there is anyone with the skills and knowledge who would like to apply for a coaching position, please contact the Women's coordinator.

'WomenSport ' Supports Player Fees (August 11th, 2010)

At the NSGSC board meeting August 10th, the women’s program was able to make a significant improvement for our financially challenged players in the Women's Division. The club has aligned with ‘KidSport’ to create a new program called ‘Women’sport’. The club donated $2,000 last night to kick the program off. Financially strapped players between the ages of 18-25 will be able to apply to ‘Women’sport’ to receive partial support for the player fees up to $200.00. Click here for an application form http://www.nsgsc.ca/upload/doc/2010%20WS%20North%20Shore%20Application.pdf   . Coaches can act as ‘sponsors’ to initiate the process, but they will need to find an adjudicator to complete the process. Take a look at the form for more info. The Women's Program plans on holding fund raising events over the course of the year to finance the continuation and expansion of this fund.

John Jukes: July 26th, 1957 to July 17, 2010 (July 17, 2010)
From the Metro Womens Soccer League Internet Site:
"It is with deep regret that we announce the sad news of the passing of John Jukes, a Director of the Metro Women's Soccer League. John passed away at home in North Vancouver.Memorial services are being planned for August.
John became a Director of the Metro Women’s Soccer League in 1988. He was an integral part of the league for many years and helped to build the league from 50 teams to over 200. Before the internet, there was John. From early on John was the “go to” person for information about the league. He fielded calls and inquiries, helped numerous teams start up and develop and found teams for many new players. At one time he did just about everything for the league. John worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the smooth running of the league, spending endless hours doing up cards, reports, phoning teams, players and referees.
He was a tireless advocate for the referees and attended theVancouver Referee Association meetings for many years as a representative of the League. John was truly an unsung hero of
the women’s game!! He will be missed. Our deepest sympathies go out to the Jukes family."

NSGSC Renegades Win MWSL Premier Womens Championshio (March 28, 2010)

The  North Shore Girls Soccer Club’s, NSGSC Renegades, made history on Sunday by being  the first Premier women’s  soccer team from the North Shore to ever win the Premier Metro Women’s Soccer League  (MWSL) Championship. Long time MWSL director and past president, Bob Cormack, said “ No North Shore team has won in the last 20 years that I have been involved with the League.  When John Mudge coached 15 years ago they did make the final but never won.” It was a cold and windy March 28th in South Surrey as the NSGSC Renegades played against BGSCC FC Canadians in the MWSL’s  Premier Division championship final. League championships have been dominated the past few years by the 2009 women`s Canadian national silver championship winners, Surrey United,  but this year two new teams battled for the prize. Burnaby scored on an unlucky breakdown of the Renegades defence early on in the first period, yet in the same period the Renegades rallied a reply with Gillian Kilburn tying the game up  by finishing off a powerful shot in what was the third rebound off a busy  Burnaby goalie. Fifteen minutes later, Kirsteen Buchan pounded a one touch pass into the net and the Renegades were up 2-1. Towards the end of the first period, Michelle Young took a penalty shot from 20 yards out that lofted  between the upper bar and the goalies outstretched hands. The second half was a physical, defensive battle, but the Renegades maintained their lead with a 3-1 victory over Burnaby. As winners of the championship game, Coaches Tony Seddon and Steve Lalune look forward to a bye and home game advantage in the Women`s Provincial A cup soccer championships that start in mid April.

Classics Team Proposed for Fall 2010 (March 13, 2010)

NSGSC is excited about establishing a team to play in the Classics Division of Metro Women’s Soccer league in the fall of 2010. We have a core of players from within the club that have expressed an interest in establishing  such a team, and we would like to hear from any other players, or groups of players, that might be interested.  The team can carry three players 25 or older (by December 31, 2010), but the majority of the players must be born in 1980 or earlier. The only rule difference is there is no slide tackling but otherwise the division is competitive and fun soccer. Please send Mac Nelson an e-mail at macnelson@telus.net  if you and your friends would be interested in joining a  Classics team on the North Shore.

Congratulations to the NSGSC Renegades: Winners of the 2007-8 MWSL Premier  Womens Division!

 September 23rd Game:

On Sunday evening in North Vancouver, North Shore Girls Soccer Club (NSGSC) Renegades Womens Premier team knocked off perennial soccer power and reigning provincial champions  Surrey United by a convincing 3-1 score. Playing in their second game of the season the Renegades dominated play early and were rewarded in the 5th minute when defender Ciara McCormack served a ball into the box that eventually landed at the feet of Anna Lauewho made no mistake in scoring the first goal of the match.

In a fast paced, physical battle both teams had opportunities to score and midway through the first half Surrey capitalized when Megan Blaker found herself alone and fired a high shot past the outstretched arms of U18 call-up keeper Hanna Bebb. Bebb, from the North Shore Storm, playing in her first game at the senior level had an excellent outing allowing one goal on 8 shots.

The second half started similar to the first with the Renegades dominating early and getting the go ahead goal in the 50th minute when Danielle Sleiman corralled a ball just past centre and fed Marie-eve Nault  who fired a rocket past the Surrey keeper to put the Renegades ahead by one.

The foul laden second half was a battle, and Surrey pressed hard. Coach Steve LaLuene recognizing the Surrey pressure changed formation to tighten up defensively. The Renegades finally capitalized after both teams fielded several scoring opportunities.  It was McCormack again who placed a free kick from the right side into traffic in front of the goal. The ball eventually found the foot of Kirsteen Buchan  who beat the United keeper for the third and final goal of the game.

All advanced to play in colleges and universities in Canada and the US. In addition to the North Shore core the Renegades welcomed 3 international players (Laue – Germany, Avner – France, Jeffers – USA) and 2 Eastern Canada players (Nault and Hamel – Quebec) to the mix. Additionally 6 of the Renegades players were members of the powerhouse Ottawa Fury of the W-League.

Coach Selection Procedures Women's/U-21
Approved at the NSGSC Women's meeting on Thursday, June 16th, 2011

Number of players and releasing players:

Teams need to carefully consider the size of their roster and should avoid taking on too many players in order to prevent player playing time problems. Teams should also take special care in assessing the player’s skill level and their availability before assigning a player to their team. Teams may have the option of players ‘registering’ in team at a lower level of play and be available for call-up when required through ‘Intra-club transfers’ but this arrangement needs to be mutually agreed upon by both teams and the Women’s AGC or Women’s VP beforehand. In general, teams may not ‘release players’, and only under exceptional conditions with the advanced permission of either the Women’s VP or Women’s AGC may  players be released.

Revised Policy (May 2, 2002)
Coach selection

Interested coaches should submit their names each year to the Women's/U-21 Coordinator on a date established by the NSGSC board. They should include a brief description of why they wish to coach a women's team, their coaching philosophy, their coaching qualifications and experience, and provide this information in writing. This material may be posted in the coaches preference form. This decision would normally occur at the  June or July executive meeting, but may be considered at any time during the year if there are coaching vacancies .

Background
  ▲Top

In December 2001, The North Shore Girls Soccer Club approved the creation of a Women's program to participate in the Metro Women's Soccer League. The club constitution was amended to include two revised mission statements: " (a) To administer, develop and encourage female youth/adult participation in the game of soccer" and (f) To facilitate the transition from youth to adult soccer under the auspices of the Club”. Adult players have a vote at the club AGM, but "Adult Members shall not vote on youth specific matters".
The Women's program is intended to provide a seamless transition for senior girls to continue playing soccer and to help bridge the gap between U-18 league play and entry into the competitive women's league. The women's league itself has almost tripled (70 to 187 teams) in the last 9 years with a total of 3700 players in the lower mainland participating in competitive soccer (in addition to U-21(Graduate) there is a Premier,Select,1st, 2nd, 3rd,and 4th division, plus classics for older players). Almost all of the major clubs in the lower mainland have senior girls teams in the Women's program.
There are currently 14 teams in the U-21 league, the U-21 program is divided into two divisions by skill, and they play teams inside their division. Each U-21 team can carry 3 overage players and is limited to 20 players. In the 2004 winter season, the NSGSC Strikers were the first NSGSC team to enter the Women's open (Division 2), they won their tier, and were promoted to Division 1 in 2005/6. In the 2005/6 winter season, three other NSGSC teams  joined them in Div 2 and 3. In the 2007-8 season, there were 15 NSGSC women's teams, with a team in every division of play. In the 2009/10 season, there were 17 NSGSC teams in play and in that year the premier team, NSGSC Renegades, won the MWSL championship.  Each team is responsible for providing their own net and flags (NSGSC will provide these to each of it's teams), failure to do so results in fines (the fines are listed below). Play for the Fall/winter season starts on the second week in September, usually on Sundays.

MWSL Fines

Registry of players wishing to play up on a game by game basis in the Women's Program
The Women's Intra-Club Transfer Coordinator is Erik Cordua-von specht  (we@c-vs.com ) 604-986-2327. If you are interested in playing up at a higher level, please contact Erik by e-mail indicating your name, team and Division, phone number, e-mail address, positions you play, and time of your teams home games. Youth players must be registered in U-17 or higher. If you are a team seeking players, please contact Erik.

Guidelines re Player Call Ups

For Coaches, Managers and Players:

When a team needs players (call this team the Borrowing team) they will contact Erik Cordua-von specht by email at  we@c-vs.com or telephone 604-986-2327.

The coach or manager of the Borrowing team will then contact the player of the other team (call this team the Lending team) to see if they are interested in playing the specific game.  The Borrowing team or Erik will then contact the Lending team coach and the Lending team will try to accommodate the wishes of the Borrowing team and the player.  However, there may be times when the Lending team coach knows that his team will be short players for their later game and it may not be possible to lend the player to the Borrowing team.  In the alternate the Lending team may be able to borrow from another team themselves and, therefore, everyone is happy. If there are issues in this regard the Women's VP will be the arbitrator.

Once it is cleared for a player to play up the Borrowing team coach or manager then needs to arrange to pick up the borrowed player's ID card or have the player bring it to the game.  At the end of the game the player should be given her card back.

For Coaches and Managers:

As well, if the player is not a Youth player (ie is a Senior player) the coach needs to prepare two copies of the Inter-Club Transfer form of and give them to the Referee at the game.

If the player is a Youth player then the two coaches have to fill out a Youth to Senior Permit Application Form, get it signed by the NSYSA Registrar (Ab Bryant – 604 986-5459; cell: 604 728-5170; fax 604 904-9398; 1474 Lynn Valley Road, North Vancouver  abbryant@aflat.ca– call ahead before visiting to make sure he is there or to arrange to do it all by fax), then fax (by Friday at noon) or deliver the signed document to the Metro Womens Soccer League office for their signature.  See the MWSL site for office hours.  You have to get this Youth to Senior form completed before Saturday morning because after noon no one is in the MWSL office to sign the form.  This fully signed form is then taken to the game and given to the Referee.

Copies of both the Inter-Club Transfer form and the Youth to Senior Permit Application Form are available on the NSGSC website (www.nsgsc.ca) under the Women’s Program (on left hand side), then under Women’s Forms.  Note that the Inter-Club Transfer form is called Intra-Club on the website but when you load it up it comes up as Inter-Club.

 Intra-Club Transfers
You will need the players card from the players team plus two copies of the Intra-club transfer form. These forms can be filled out at the game, and only require the signature of the recipient team. These transfers are for game by game play and Intra-club player transfers  can only be used for league games, not cup games. Up to 5 players can be transfered per game, but they must be from a team at a lower division. Print two copies of these forms (Womens Intra Club Transfer Form.pdf ) and then ask the player to bring her card to the game.

Youth Transfers
Note: from the league (Oct, 2008) "All youth to senior permits must be faxed into the office at 604 291-7518 by noon on Friday of that week in order to be signed and sent back so that player can play that weekend. Any forms received after noon on any Friday are not guaranteed to be back in time for that player to play." You could probably take the forms in person to the MWSL office hours to get signed on Saturday, but don't fax on Saturday.
Transfers from youth require the players team to sign off, the District registrar, Ab Bryant (1474 Lynn Valley Road, Tel: 604 986-5459; Fax:604 904-9398; e-mail:abbryant@aflat.ca)
the recipient team, and the MWSL. This whole process takes at least a couple of days, and you must get the form Youth to Senior Permit (to allow youth player to play up temporarily) faxed into the MWSL league by Friday at noon (or deliver in person to 6501 Sprott Street
Burnaby, they are open until 12:00pm on Saturdays) for a Sunday game. Their fax number is  (604) 291-7518 . Up to three youth players can be transferred per game (not for cup games). Players must be from U-17 or higher.

The Parksville Annual Beach Soccer Tournament is your opportunity to play in the hottest soccer event on the Island. Adult teams of 10, with any skill level in women's, men's and co-ed divisions are welcome. Played on a soft sand surface, this sport allows players of all levels to try out their improvisation, skill and agility. The compact pitch allows players to score from anywhere. This leads to fast paced, high scoring games. With an irregular playing surface, the ball tends to be kept more in the air than regular soccer. The rules of the game are generally the same as grass soccer except the following:

  • 5 on 5 (4 players + a keeper)
  • Unlimited substitutions on the fly
  • No offsides
  • No shoes, cleats or shin pads (but socks can be worn to protect feet)
  • Two 14-minute halves
  • Kick-ins rather than throw-ins
  • Goal kicks are taken by the goalie using his hands.
  • 30 X 50 yard fields
  • Smaller nets

Women'sport Financial Assistance

The Women’sport Fund is designed to remove the financial obstacles that prevent some female sports participants 18 years old and over from playing sport.  Grants to INDIVIDUAL ATHLETES are given to women who cannot afford sport registration fees and would otherwise not be able to participate in a season of sport.

Guidelines

·       Females over the age of 18 years are eligible for a grant.  For those 18 years or younger, the KidsSport Program is available and application forms can be found here:  http://www.kidsportnorthshore.ca/apply/

Grants are only available to players registered on a North Shore Girls Soccer Club team (on www.nsgsc.ca)

Applicants must be in good financial standing with NSGSC and have no  outstanding fees from previous seasons.  In the event that a player has outstanding fees owing to the club, they must be paid in full before the  applicant is eligible to receive Women'sport Funding. Players may contact womensport@nsgsc.ca for more information on this requirement.

·       Grants of a maximum of $230 are to be used for the payment of sport participation/registration fees.

·       Camps, equipment, travel to playoffs, championships, etc. are not eligible expenses.

·       Two applications permitted per calendar year (fall season and summer season), for an eligible team, may be submitted.

·       Applications must be received prior to or during the requested season of sport.

Process & Eligibility

·       A Reference, (counsellor, coach, friend) other than the adjudicator, must initiate the application on behalf of the applicant.

The WomensSport Committee will review the application for completeness and determine the appropriate level of funding for the applicant:

-       Students – if you are currently enrolled in a post-secondary program or a trade/vocational school

-       Recent Graduates – if you have graduated or completed a program in the previous three (3) calendar years before the beginning of the season

-       Parents – if you have children

It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure the application is complete and to forward it to NSGSC Women’sport. womensport@nsgsc.ca

Incomplete applications will be returned.

 Grant Distribution

·               Please register at www.nsgsc.ca and for payment choose the "Financial

assistance" option  in the pull down menu. Your assignment to a team will not occur until your

women'sport application  has been approved and processed. If you have any questions please, contact

the women's vice-president at womensvp@nsgsc.ca"

·       Processing time will vary depending on the availability of funds.

Please use the most recent application form as guidelines may change at any time!
